Adaptive Learning
What is Adaptive Learning?
Put simply Adaptive Learning is an online delivery method that automatically adjusts content and training to match the needs and skill level of each learner. It uses proven data analytics and intelligent technologies that adjust in real-time to deliver an optimal experience and drive engagement.
Area9 Lyceum’s Rhapsode platform (the one we use at Emerald Hill) uses state-of-the-art AI to test understanding and presents only the content that the learner has not yet conquered. In effect, it recreates at scale the experience of a one-to-one personal tutor. Depending on what they already know, this means each learner in a class may follow a unique pathway through the content, but every learner achieves 100% comprehension – typically with 90% less retention effort and in half the time compared to last generation E-learning.
Why Do We Use Adaptive Learning for Business Agility?
Change is occurring on a seismic scale. There is a potential landslide from erosion in the lower-level job market, but at the same time automation and new technologies mean that humans must develop new skills. Rapidly changing job requirements demand more training. But just as the factory model of mass production is broken, so is the ‘factory model’ of training. 21st century product development requires 21st century approaches to learning and development. At the heart of the future of learning are the compressed timeframes in which the workforce needs to be continuously skilled and reskilled. Content needs to be curated and training needs to occur – but to be effective needs to be supported by self-learning.
Emerald Hill created a pioneering adaptive learning course, Scrum Fundamentals, three years ago. We tested it thoroughly, and based on overwhelmingly positive feedback, have used it since as pre-course material for our instructor-led certification courses. The results are startling. We have now created an entire programme of adaptive learning focused on addressing a key skills gap in Agile development – the Product Owner role. The objective is for learners to gain a level of proficiency that provides access to knowledge and skills more quickly and efficiently than looking up information.
Why Should Your Organisation Use Adaptive Learning for Business Agility?
Given the time and resource constraints in professional development, accomplishing training goals is especially challenging. Last-generation e-learning falls short at meeting the multiple challenges of delivering engaging content, detecting and filling knowledge gaps, reinforcing skill-building and increasing both competence and confidence. The key is to approximate one-to-one tuition and to deliver it, cost-effectively, at scale. Area9’s advanced platform provides the ability to measure skills and competencies at the start and at the end of training. L&D professionals can capture not only the number of people served, but more importantly, the evidence that each individual was served in the best way possible.
